11.
Bertha Louisa SPARKS was born on 16 Aug 1870 in Congresbury, Somerset, England,
was baptised 11 Sep 1870 in Congresbury, England, and died on 23 Jul 1944 in Kincardine, Ontario,
at age 73. She was buried in Kincardine Cemetery. The cause of her death was Pernicious Anemia.
Bertha married Archibald McLEAN son of Angus Edward McLEAN and Sarah Ann BATTEN, on 26 Apr 1898 in Kinloss, Ontario. Archibald was born on 17 Sep 1868 in Kincardine, Ontario, died on 19 Feb 1949 in Owen Sound, Ontario, at age 80, and was buried on 23 Feb 1949 in Kincardine, Ontario. Bertha was Archie's second wife. He had one child from his previous marriage. She stayed with her mother for most of the time. After Charles was born, the family moved to Geneva, New York, for several years. During this time, Archie became foreman at a brickyard in Geneva. For a time they lived at number 18 Avenue B. The house is no longer standing. Somewhere in late 1903 to early 1904, the family moved back to Kincardine, where they lived on Queen Street. Archie continued to make bricks, following in the tradition of his father and Uncle Murdoch. The house is still standing. Both Archie and Bertha are buried in Kincardine Cemetery, along with their son, William. My mother, youngest daughter of their daughter Bertha, remembers having to sit with her grandfather while he ate his food. He had moved to their home, and was in their care. She says he rarely said anything to her, but when she would clear the dishes for him, he would often give her a quarter. She remembers Bertha Louisa as never smiling, cranky, and rather frightening. That is a Child's point of view. However, I don't have any pictures of her smiling, either.

Emma Phyllis SPARKS was born 21 February 1886. It is assumed she married a man named BRUBAKER given the name of the grandchild living with John and Jane in 1910. MUCH more will need to be learned before we can verify all of this. In Aug/04 I visited the Michigan Archives and found very little. Something that DOES give me a clue is that a Mr CA Brubaker and his wife who now live near John and Jane in 1910 USED to live in Illinios. I will follow that up. Perhaps this is why I couldn't find Emma's marriage registration in Michigan.

Viola E BRUBAKER was born 30 Sep 1907. She is listed as the 2 year old granddaughter of
John and Jane Sparks in Michigan in 1910. As yet, I am unable to clearly identify her father because the Vital Stats offiuce needs me to prove her death date (index onkly goes until 1914) or wait until 100 years is up.  I AM still working on it. I'm down, but have not been kicked yet (Aug/04).
