| Sparks ~ Second Generation 2. Samuel SPARKS- so far our archived sources tell us that Samuel was born on 10 Oct 1845 in Congresbury, Somerset, England, was baptized 6 Nov 1845 in Congresbury, Somerset, England. Samuel died on 29 Apr 1930 in Port Elgin, Saugeen Twp, Ontario, at age 84, and was buried on 3 May 1930 in Sanctuary Park, Port Elgin, Ontario. The cause of his death was acute Bright's Disease. Service for his and Mary's funeral was at 2 o'clock. They lived on Goderich Rd, N Saugeen Twp in a hotel there while their home was being built. They came to Port Elgin on July 8 1874, and settled in their new home at Sparks Corners in 1881 (Gore Rd nr Con 4). He was occupied alternately as a labourer, and farmer. He married Mary Ann HARVEY, 9 Oct 1869, in Clevedon, Somerset, England. Mary Ann was born 3 Aug. 1846, Congresbury, Somerset, England, baptised on Aug. 6 1846, and died 2 May 1930, Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada at age 83. The cause of her death was heart and kidney trouble. She was buried with her husband on 3 May 1930, Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada. She rested with him after death as she had always been with him in life. Their headstone has three other names on it: Charles 1881-1906 their son, Albert 1883-1887 another son, Emily M. 1875-1949, a daughter who never married. Clicking on their names will take you to the page containing the scan of the May 7th, 1930 Obituary for Sam and Mary Ann. The marriage of Samuel & Mary was registered in the 4th quarter, 1869, at Bedminster, Somerset. Sarah HARVEY and Sophia TRANTER were witness to the marriage. Sarah was one of Mary Ann's 12 siblings. She married a man named Oliver POOLE, and spent some time in parts of Ontario before settling in Stratford, Ontario. We don't know who Sophia was - possibly another sibling, already married? Samuel married Mary Ann HARVEY, daughter of John jr HARVEY and Emily CLARK, on 9 Oct 1869 in Clevedon, Somerset, England. Their children were: + 11 F i. Bertha Louisa SPARKS was born on 16 Aug 1870 (I originally had her as born on August 1, 1870, but her registration says the 16th) in Congresbury, Somerset, England, was baptised 11 Sep 1870 in Congresbury, England, died on 23 Jul 1944 in Kincardine, Ontario, at age 73, and was buried in Kincardine Cemetery. Bertha married Archibald McLEAN, son of Sarah Ann BATTEN and Angus McLEAN, (b. 17 Sep 1868, d. 19 Feb 1949) on 26 Apr 1898 in Kinloss, Ontario. There is a rumour that when Bertha was born, Sam was over here in Canada preparing some land, or purchasing land. None of this has been proved except for the fact that her baptismal registration states "father in America". Archibald was a brickmaker, like his father and uncle. He took Bertha and thier family to Geneva, New York for a time from 1900 to 1904 where he was foreman at a brickyard (possibly Dove), and then returned to Kincardine where he continued the business, and also ran a general store. + 12 M ii. George Henry SPARKS was born on 28 May 1877 in Port Elgin, Ontario, died on 28 Dec 1953 in Port Elgin, Ontario, at age 76, and was buried on 31 Dec 1953 in Port Elgin, Ontario. George married Mary Ann DYMER (b. 16 Apr 1884, d.15 Aug 1968) on 23 April 1908 in Port Elgin, Ontario. Mary Ann was the daughter of Charlotte CHALKE and Henry DYMER. + 13 M iii. Samuel William (jr) SPARKS was born on 29 Sep 1875 in Ontario, died in Kincardine, and was buried on 9 Mar 1959 in Kincardine Cemetery. Samuel married Alice May MOLE (b. 1885, d. Aug 1961) 8 Oct 1907 (one source gives their marriage year as 1911) in McMurrich Township, Ontario. Alice was the daughter of Eliza and John MOLE. Her sister, Martha, married Sam's brother Arthur. + 14 F iv. Emily Mary Ann SPARKS was born on 23 Aug 1879 in Port Elgin, Ontario, died on 31 Mar 1949 in Saugeen Twp, Ontario, at age 69, and was buried in Port Elgin, Cemetery, Ontario. The new headstone there gives her birth year as 1875. This is a misread of the original stone (poor thing) so don't believe it. Emily never married. + 15 M v. Arthur John SPARKS was born on 7 Feb 1880 in Port Elgin, Ontario, died on 18 Jun 1954 in Saugeen Twp, Ontario, at age 74, and was buried on 21 Jun 1954 in Port Elgin, Ontario. Arthur married Martha MOLE (b. 1881, d. 14 Sep 1954) on 31 Mar 1909 in Southampton, Ontario, Canada. Martha was the daughter of Eliza and John Mole. Her sister, Alice, married Art's brother Sam. + 16 M vi. Charles Edward SPARKS was born on 3 Aug 1881 in Saugeen, Ontario, died 14 Oct 1906 in Port Elgin, Ontario, at age 25, and was buried in Port Elgin, Ontario. Charles never married. Charles's cause of death was Appendicitis. + 17 M vii. Archie James SPARKS was born 27 Jul 1884 in Port Elgin, Ontario and died on 31 Oct 1950 in Saugeen Twp, Ontario. Archie married Susan Elizabeth BAKER (b. 9 Jul 1906, d. 30 Oct 1996) on 4 Jun 1934. Susan's parents are unknown at this point (May/03) +18 M viii. Alfred Allen SPARKS was born in 12 Jan 1883 in Port Elgin, Ontario, died 1 Nov 1887 in Southampton, Ontario. Cause of death was Croup, and was buried in Port Elgin, Ontario. Alfred has, up until now been known to us as Albert. That is the name on his headstone. However, the headstone is newer - has been redone - and also gives an incorrect birth year for Emily as well. I was unable to locate a birth registration for little Alfred/Albert. He never married. 3. John SPARKS was born 7 May 1847 in Congresbury, England, and died sometime between 1910 and 1920 in Weare, Oceana, Michigan. He was a farm. He immigrated from England 1875. At least that's what the 1901 census says. In fact, it appears he may have been in Michigan in 1870, which is what the 1910 census states. Perhaps he came over with Samuel, and they were BOTH in Michigan. John married Jane WARD daughter of Phyllis ROBINSON and Charles WARD, on 24 May 1881 in Allanford, Bruce Township North. Jane was born 3 Aug 1850 in Michigan, USA and died between 1920 and 1930 in Michigan. In 1901, Emma and John and Jane are all together, but George is no where to be found. John is working not too far away as a servant. In 1902 the family left and moved to Michigan, where it appears Emma married. There is a little girl named Viola Brubaker (2 years old) in the census living with John as a granddaughter. Jane's information for the 1910 say she has 3 living of 6 children born to her. I have Jane and John in census data from 1881 to 1910 (1920, really) and these three children are the only living ones mentioned. Therefore, I feel George is still alive, and that Viola is just visiting her grandparents. Their children were: + 19 M i. John Finly SPARKS was born 17 July, 1882 in Southampton, Bruce, Ontario, and died Dec 1966 in Baldwin, Lake, Michigan. He was a farmer. John married Ellen UNKNOWN . He cared for his mother after his father died, and in the 1930 census he is listed in the Ingham County Infirmary as an inmate. At one point the infirmary was a poor house, but it doesn't make sense to me to have him go that far for such a thing. + 20 M ii. George SPARKS was born circa 1883 in Bruce County, Ontario. George W married Ruby SMITH, but is not locatable in the 1920. I believe Ruby may have died in 1912. I have no proof as of yet, as the 1912 death index is in extremely poor shape, and much is unreadable. George may be the 37 year old man in Jasper, Michigan who says he is single (or at least someone did). There is no George Sparks fitting any of these in the 1930 census. No social security information is available for him. Ruby was born October 1889 in Oceana, Michigan and was the daughter of Thera SABIN and Francis M SMITH. + 21 M iii John SPARKS was born Dec 1883 in Southampton, Ontario. His death registration was located at the Bruce County archives. At this point, I am thinking he was a twin to George. I have no idea why there are two sons named John in this family. John died of Consumption on 8 July, 1884 in Southampton, Ontario. He was listed as 7 months old, and John SPARKS Sr was the informant. John never married. + 22 F iii. Emma Phyllis SPARKS was born 21 Feb 1886 in Ontario. Emma may have married Mr. BRUBAKER C 1906. I am only going on the name of Viola BRUBAKER as John and Jane's granddaughter for this information. It is not proved and needs more work (Aug /04). No more information about Emma has been found at this point. + 23 M iv Charles Westley SPARKS was born 24 Aug 1889 in Southampton, Ontario, and died 8 Nov 1889 in Southampton, Ontario. The cause of death was "morasmus" (marasmus) a form of protein-caloric malnutrition caused by a diet deficient in both protein and carbohydrates. His birth and death registrations have both been located. He never married. 4. Sarah SPARKS was born August 1850 in Blagdon, Somerset, England. She died 17 April 1851 in Blagdon, Somerset, England. She was 8 months old. Her death was not certified. The cause of death is listed in the register as "debility". She never married. 5. George SPARKS was born 29 Nov 1851 in Puxton, Somerset, England. Through the volunteer efforts of a very sweet woman in New Zealand, I was able to note this previously unknown son of Mary Ann and John. I have confirmation of his birth and his parentage. That is all I can tell you for now. Stay tuned. As far as I know, he never married. 6. Henry SPARKS was born on 9 Jun 1854 in Congresbury, England and died on 10 Jun 1930 in Waterloo, Seneca County, New York, at age 76. Henry married Hannah HILLMAN daughter of Henry HILLMAN and Elizabeth WILLIAMS on 15 Feb 1875 in Congresbury, England. Hannah was born on 26 May 1852 in Somerset, England and died on 17 Apr 1921 in Waterloo, Seneca County, New York, at age 68. Both are buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Geneva, New York. Henry was a farmer, and a labourer. In the 1920 census he is listed as a labourer in lumber and coal yard belonging to his son-in-law, Robert, but in the 1921 Waterloo directory he is listed as Vice President. He and Hannah lived their later years in Waterloo with Mary and Robert. Their children were: + 24 F i. Mary Elizabeth SPARKS was born on 12 Dec 1876 in Geneva New York, and died on 9 May 1970, at age 93 in Waterloo, New York. Mary married Robert Samuel BAGSHAW, son of Thomas and Mary J BAGSHAW on 20 April 1904 in Geneva, New York. Robert was born August 1874 in Abney, Derbyshire, England, and died 30 August 1931 in Waterloo, New York. Mary and Robert had only one son, Henry Robert, but he died at a very young age.Robert was a milkman in Geneva. He and Mary moved to Waterloo after Henry Robert died. There, Robert (known as "Sam") began R. S. Bagshaw &Co. Inc. Coal and Lumber on 25 Church Street. Mary became the Secretary, and later, Henry Sparks became the VP. Robert was President and Treasurer. Robert was a Trustee for Ward 2 in Waterloo from 1923 to 1926 inclusive. When he died he bequeathed a sum of money to the local Library, and his name is on a plaque in the main hallway. The gentleman who became VP after Robert and Henry passed on was Chas. P. Terwilliger. The local museum is named for him. Mary retained her presidency of Bagshaw until at least 1942. In 1958 she is listed as living in her Waterloo home on West Main. When Mary's sister died, her husband and family brought her back to Geneva from North Dakota to be buried with her family. About 5 years later, the family returned again. This time to bury Mary's niece, Margaret. At this point, Mary's other niece, Mary Helen came to live with the family rather than returning to The Dakotas. + 25 F ii. Georgianna SPARKS was born on 2 Apr 1879 in Geneva, New York, and died on 2 Feb 1919, at age 39 in Cavalier, North Dakota of Influenza. Her body was returned to Geneva, and she is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Geneva with her parents. Georgianna married Arthur E HALL, son of William HALL and Mary Ann KERSLEY. Arthur was a minister and travelled extensively. He was born 26 Oct 1876 in Reading, Berkshire, England, and died 10 July 1958. Arthur remarried after Georgianna's death, and fathered two more children. + 26 M iii. Albert Henry SPARKS was born on 12 Dec 1875 in Geneva New York, and died on 6 Jun 1958, at age 82 in Geneva. He is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Geneva. Albert married Lulu (Lula) WHITLOCK. They had two children, but then divorced. Albert went to live with his sister, Mary. + 27 M iv. William George SPARKS was born on 14 Jul 1880 in Geneva, New York, and died on 10 Jun 1949 in Rochester, New York, at age 68. William married Emma L TURNER, daughter of Edwin H and Della D TURNER C 1905 in Monroe County, New York. Emma was born C 1877. More study needs to be done here. (Aug 7/03) William went from farming to building contracting between 1920 and 1930. + 28 M v. Alfred Walter SPARKS was born on 26 Oct 1884 in Geneva, New York and died on 17 Jan 1964, at age 79 in Geneva, New York. He married Martha Augusta NERLICH, daughter of Ernest J and Augusta W NERLICH, in 1912 in Ontario County, New York. Martha was born C 1884 in Germany, and died 12 Sept 1961. She and Alfred are buried with her parents and siblings. + 29 M vi. Ernest Edward SPARKS was born on 31 Jul 1886 and died on 26 May 1931, at age 44. Ernest married Sarah W LAYTON in 1913 in Ontario County, New York. Sarah was born C 1875 in New York. Neither is indexed in the 1930 census. |
