Geneva is a small town in Ontario County, New York. It is a lovely place to drive through, although you MUST be careful not to get too close to the sidewalk curbs or you could puncture a tire. ASK ME how I know this to be true. The Geneva Historical Society is located in the wonderful Prouty-Chew house, the address of which is given above. There is free parking on the road outside the house, which is located in a lovely area of town where the large old houses reign supreme. The records in the archives are not numerous, by any means, but we were still able to locate a good deal of information. They have city directories and indexes to the cemeteries in town. They have a few photo albums I enjoyed looking through, and there are other resources. They have fiche and film as well. The staff is very friendly, and will assist you with anything you may need. Photcopies were, I believe, a quarter for each page.
Karen O ~ Archivist Very nice woman. Say hello for me.
One of the very great things about researching in Geneva is that the City Hall has records to look through - right THERE in a tiny room with some old books and indexes. For a minimal charge - or possibly a donation, you can get the records you find copied. The room holds Births, Marriages, and Deaths for Geneva itself. Next time I go down, I plan to take a sleeping bag *grin* because I didn't take NEARLY enough time there. If you want to find out about someone in an area surrounding the city proper, you can go to the Town Hall, but there is a charge for the look up, and you do NOT get a good copy of the information. The researcher, though, was VERY sweet when I went.
The Archives charge a nominal fee for research work. It is minimal when you go in person to use the Archives. Members, of course, use the room free of charge. To find out exact fees, please contact the archives.
